Blue Sky Hope Center |

Where our money goes
A ray of sunshine. A beacon of light. A silver lining in the dark clouds of an epidemic.
Chose your metaphor.
The “Blue Sky Hope Centre” is all of them.
The Blue Sky Hope Centre offers hope, support, and medical attention to impoverished women in South Africa dealing with HIV and AIDS. What makes it extraordinary is that the center has been established by the women themselves.
The Blue Sky Hope Centre is the latest venture of Talking Beads, a business collective formed by 4,500 mostly poor, rural South African crafts women. Although Talking Beads has enabled these women to support themselves by selling their beadwork, the ravages of HIV/AIDS are now threatening their lives and their livelihoods.
Many of the women of Talking Beads and their family members are infected with HIV/AIDS. This has forced them to make the terrible choice between earning a living or caring for the dying. With nowhere to turn, they have decided to lean on each other and establish a “center of hope” for their community.
In January 2004, members of Talking Beads registered as community organisation, and The Blue Sky Hope Centre was officially born.
Currently housed in the Talking Beads headquarters, the centre’s immediate goal is to provide community members with a safe place to go for HIV testing, support, counselling, and medical attention.
Yet a diagnosis alone is not enough to “heal” a person. Nor, for that matter, is health care. Eventually, the Blue Sky Hope Centre aims to create new opportunities for people by providing them with job training and business developments that will enable them to better sustain themselves and their families. To this end, the centre hopes to establish a bakery, a fruit juice plant, a vegetable garden, and a business producing school and corporate uniforms, along with beadwork gifts.
The Blue Sky Hope Centre has all the makings of a success story waiting to happen. It is based on a dire medical need, and the people themselves are totally engaged in this endeavor. But as the women of Talking Beads have learned, nobody can go it alone.
